Source engine is an engine created by Valve software, and is used in almost every game they release. It originally started sometime in the early 2000s as a replacement for their previous engine, which was based on a code fork of Quake.

Source engine, unlike many other engines today, does not have a major IDE to aid in development. As a result, Source is most popular among developers who are creating mods rather than entire new games from scratch.
